Objective To investigate the current status of nurses'work engagement and to analyze the effects of intrinsic motivation and career calling on work engagement. Methods From May to July 2024,184 nurses from three hospitals in Jilin Province were selected using convenience sampling.Data were collected using a general information questionnaire, the medical staffs'intrinsic driving scale, the Career Calling Scale, and the Work Engagement Scale. Results The total score of nurses'work engagement was(69.32±11.72),the total score of intrinsic motivation was(144.87±24.79),and the total score of career calling was 40(35,47).Spearman correlation analysis showed that intrinsic motivation was significantly positively correlated with work engagement, not only in the total scores but also across all dimensions(r=0.197-0.698,P<0.01).Career calling was also significantly positively correlated with work engagement(r=0.674,P<0.01).Hierarchical multiple regression analysis demonstrated that, after controlling for baseline characteristics, intrinsic motivation and career calling were important factors influencing nurses'work engagement, jointly explaining 41.7%of the variance in work engagement(both P<0.05).Conclusion Nurses'intrinsic motivation and career calling are at moderately levels, high while their work engagement is at a moderate level.Intrinsic motivation and career calling significantly affect nurses'work engagement.Nursing managers should formulate diversified strategies to enhance nurses'intrinsic motivation and career calling, thereby improving their work engagement.
